Poop To Power Florida

I just finished a move to Florida, so I’m interested in where my electricity is coming from. I can rest easy knowing my electricity comes from wind and even easier from solar (sunshine state anyone?). From poop? Bring it on. MaxWest Energy has partnered with the city of Sanford in Central Florida to do just that.
Together they are building a energy plant to convert the sludge from Sanford’s water treatment plant into carbon monoxide and hydrogen and burn those gases instead of natural gas.
From Paul Moore, Utility Director, City of Sanford:
“Compared to the projected cost of natural gas, a fossil fuel, Sanford will save $9,000,000 over the 20-year life of our contract,” said Paul Moore, the city’s utility director. “This technology has provided us with the opportunity to save money while managing our waste stream and protecting the environment.”

I don’t know about all that, but I’m all about solar and wind power definitely. I’m not sure what the polling would look like for those in favor of it, but I saw today at the Palm Beach Post that says St. Lucie County residents are 80% in favor of a new wind turbine project – so that’s a start at least. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/services/content/tcoast/epaper/2008/04/03/m1b_slwind_0402.html?cxtype=rss&cxsvc=7&cxcat=77
