Unscrew America

We don’t usually post about new technology on here unless it’s one that is totally natural, nor do we usually post about reducing your carbon footprint, but this website is simply too good to pass up. It’s one of the most fun, inspired and happy websites I’ve seen in a long time and being a web designer, I see a lot of websites. Between the music and the fun illustrations, I would have gotten up to dance if I didn’t dance like I was painfully white and embarrass my girlfriend at parties (I don’t do that, I swear).
Unscrew America is all about switching from regular incandescent bulbs to CFLs or LED lights. We’ve all seen enough sites on this to make our eyes bleed, but not only is this one fun and inspiring, it’s packed with a TON of information. I’ve read up a lot on CFL’s and LED lighting, and I still learned a lot from this site. Did you know that only 5% of the energy used to light regular incandescent bulbs is converted to light? The other 95% escapes as heat. In all my reading and with how much of an electronics nerd I was when I was younger, I can’t believe I never caught onto that statistic! I guess it just goes to show how the right design and medium can help you remember things (yay graphic design!). It also links to several other valuable resources for information on the topic and even on other seemingly irrelevant topics.
The site was created by the producer of An Inconvenient Truth, Lesley Chilcott and Austin’s SG&M Idea City and the teams at Boom Design Group and Fluid Design Group.
